Pilot Chapter 1: Mythology, Is It Real?
I was just trying to read. I repeat, I was just trying to read this old mythology encyclopedia my parents bought me last Christmas. They thought that it suited me, which it actually… doesn’t.
How did this start? Well, it started with my pun directed to my parents about how Zeus was the god of water—I clearly knew he was the god of thunder—in Greek mythology. I jokingly made the remark to my parents, “Do you know why Zeus is the god of water? It’s because he likes to go under the Z.” Yes, it’s a very ridiculous pun, and I still regret making that pun. My parents looked at me questioning as if I actually made that bad pun and laughed afterwards. 
That one small incident caused my parents to buy me a mythology encyclopedia with the name “Mendel E.” inscribed on the back with bronze or copper. The book was a brown leather-covered book with the words “Mythology Encyclopedia” carved flamboyantly on it. Except that, there was nothing particularly else. No author, no publisher, just those two words and my name. 
The pages in the book seemed to be very recent by the colored images and the advanced quality of the paper, but the cover and the smell from the book was of an antique bookshop. They told me that it was my New Years present, which does not exist. They also urged me to read it to understand mythology and know it by heart. Even though I told them I was joking on that pun and that I, probably, do have common sense, they still told me to read them at least for fun. After laughing, my parents admitted that they bought it because of the pun incident which reminded me of them. Great.
Even though I was annoyed, I was joyful for this thoughtful gift of an encyclopedia. Starting from the concept of “mythology” as well as the ancient gods, I read it whenever I had time to read. The author, if there was one, did a great job in explaining these characters in the myths around the world as if they were real. 
To be very honest, it may seem like I hate mythology with all these descriptions, but I actually do love mythology. All the gods, superpowers, drama, and fun mixed up together creating a fascinating story that passed from generation to generation, mouth to mouth, that was mythology. The culture and the soul of the people intertwined into a story, that was also mythology.
One freezing mid-January day during winter break, I was reading the “Norse Gods” chapter in the living room right next to the fireplace on the brown fluffy sofa. My parents were out of the house to shop for Christmas goods, which “will be for next year.” I was alone, listening to music and reading peacefully. 
I was at the section about the funny stories around Thor and Loki, the two well-known Norse Gods. Sure, I knew about them because of how they were used in pop culture, but I didn’t really familiarize myself with these Norse gods that were so distant from my culture and my country. I lived in Massachusetts, not in any of the Scandinavian countries. I had no ancestors from Northern Europe; my ancestors were from Northern Africa, according to a DNA test. As I sipped my hot marshmallow-filled cocoa, I continued to read with my favorite playlist on.
Reading the stories of how these two gods were to each other, it reminded me of my cousins. They always seemed to fight with one using his mental abilities and the other using his physical strength. They loved teasing each other, making fights break out whenever I see them. Despite all that, they knew that they were a family, and they defended one another when trouble came. I mumbled to myself, “It would be such fun if these two gods were in real life. They would be just like my cousins, which can be funny in a way… but, eh, it’s fake. They're all symbolism.”
I really shouldn’t have said that. Especially in front of a book that started glowing in blue that grew stronger and stronger.
I tossed the book on the floor nearby and ran full speed into the nearest safe place I can find: my room. I slammed and locked the door. Afterwards, I sat behind the door and turned off the playlist I was listening to. I smashed the numbers 911 frantically onto my phone, There were thuds and crashes…
With a probable “Ow.”

Hello! Sugargliderowl here. This is one of the few pilot chapters of Mythology, Is It Real?, a story that I am working on. It’s about an adventure taken by three teenagers and two gods from the perspective of a teenager. This is the prologue and first chapter of the story. In other words, it’s the not-so-edited introduction of the plot. Let me know how you think!

INTRODUCTION.
The Hebrews now entitle all the Five Books of Moses, from the initial words, which originally were written like one continued word or verse; but the Sept. have preferred to give the titles the most memorable occurrences of each work. On this occasion, the Creation of all things out of nothing, strikes us with peculiar force. We find a refutation of all the heathenish mythology, and of the world’s eternity, which Aristotle endeavoured to establish. We behold the short reign of innocence, and the origin of sin and misery, the dispersion of nations, and the providence of God watching over his chosen people, till the death of Joseph, about the year 2369 (Usher) 2399 (Sal. and Tirin) B.C. 1631. We shall witness the same care in the other Books of Scripture, and adore his wisdom and goodness in preserving to himself faithful witnesses, and a true Holy Catholic Church, in all ages, even when the greatest corruption seemed to overspread the land. This Book is so called from its treating of the Generation, that is, of the Creation and the beginning of the world. The Hebrews call it Bereshith, from the word with which it begins. It contains not only the History of the Creation of the World, but also an account of its progress during the space of 2369 years, that is, until the death of Joseph.

Sara's death and burial in the field bought of Ephron.
[1] And Sara lived a hundred and twenty-seven years. Vixit autem Sara centum viginti septem annis.
[2] And she died in the city of Arbee which is Hebron, in the land of Chanaan: and Abraham came to mourn and weep for her. Et mortua est in civitate Arbee, quae est Hebron, in terra Chanaan : venitque Abraham ut plangeret et fleret eam.
[3] And after he rose up from the funeral obsequies, he spoke to the children of Heth, saying: Cumque surrexisset ab officio funeris, locutus est ad filios Heth, dicens :
[4] I am a stranger and sojourner among you: give me the right of a burying place with you, that I may bury my dead. Advena sum et peregrinus apud vos : date mihi jus sepulchri vobiscum, ut sepeliam mortuum meum.
[5] The children of Heth answered, saying: Responderunt filii Heth, dicentes :
[6] My Lord, hear us, thou art a prince of God among us: bury thy dead in our principal sepulchres: and no man shall have power to hinder thee from burying thy dead in his sepulchre. [17] And the field that before was Ephron's, wherein was the double cave, looking towards Mambre, both it and the cave, and all the trees thereof in all its limits round about, Confirmatusque est ager quondam Ephronis, in quo erat spelunca duplex, respiciens Mambre, tam ipse, quam spelunca, et omnes arbores ejus in cunctis terminis ejus per circuitum,

[19] And so Abraham buried Sara his wife, in a double cave of the field, that looked towards Mambre, this is Hebron in the land of Chanaan. Atque ita sepelivit Abraham Saram uxorem suam in spelunca agri duplici, quae respiciebat Mambre. Haec est Hebron in terra Chanaan.
[20] And the field was made sure to Abraham, and the cave that was in it, for a possession to bury in, by the children of Heth. Et confirmatus est ager, et antrum quod erat in eo, Abrahae in possessionem monumenti a filiis Heth.
Commentary:
Ver. 1. Sara. She is the only woman whose age the Scripture specifies; a distinction which her exalted dignity and faith deserved. Gal. iv. 23. Heb. xi. 11. She was a figure of the Christian Church. C.
Ver. 2. City. Heb. Cariath arbah, Jos. xiv. 15. --- Which is Hebron. Serarius thinks it took its name from the society (cherber) between Abraham and the princes of the city. Hebron the son of Caleb possessed it afterwards. --- Came from Bersabee, (G. xxii. 19.) or to the place where the corpse lay, at Arbee, which signifies four; as Adam, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, with their four wives, reposed there. C. --- And weep. In the middle of this word, in the printed Hebrew, there is left a small c; whence the Rabbins ridiculously infer, that Abraham wept but a short time. But the retaining of greater, less, suspended and inverted letters in the Hebrew Bible, can be attributed to no other cause than a scrupulous veneration even for the faults of transcribers. Kennicott
Ver. 3. Obsequies, or solemn mourning, accompanied with prayer. Acts viii. 2. Matt. xii. The Jews are still accustomed to say, when they bury their dead, "Ye fathers, who sleep in Hebron, open to him the gates of Eden;" herein agreeing with the Catholic doctrine, as they did in the days of Judas the Machabee. H.
Ver. 6. Prince of God, powerful and holy, and worthy of respect. H. --- A great prince. See Acts vii. 5. where S. Stephen says, that God did not give Abraham a foot of land, meaning as an inheritance; and that Abraham bought this double cave, for a sepulchre, of the sons of Hemor, the son of Sichem; (C.) from which latter he seems to derive the name of the place, which is here called Hebron. H. --- Nothing is more common, than for men and places to have two names; though some think, the name of Abraham has been inserted in the Acts by a mistake of the copyists, when Jacob was meant. See G. xxxiii. 19. C.
Ver. 7. Bowed down to the people. Adoravit, literally, adored. But this word here, as well as in many other places in the Latin Scriptures, is used to signify only an inferior honour and reverence paid to men, expressed by a bowing down of the body.
Ver. 16. Sicles. About £50. H. --- It was no simony to buy land for a sepulchre, as it was not blessed. M. --- Current money, was such as passed among merchants, though probably not yet coined in any part of the world; and therefore we find, that Abraham and others weigh the pieces of silver or gold. In this manner were bargains concluded before witnesses, who in those days supplied the want of writings and lawyers. C.

You woke up that Friday morning much earlier than you were used to. Glancing back now, it feels almost like your body was warning you that something was coming, something unnatural for your city and for you all together. You should have paid more attention then, should have seen the signs before it all happened.
It was strange stirring in your bed at the time, only to hear the chirping birds outside your window as they greet the first burst of sunlight on the horizon instead of the quietness of the afternoon you usually hear. It was still fairly dim in your bedroom, and Tom — usually the early riser — wasn’t even up. You glanced over at the clock on your nightstand, noting the time of 6:03 a.m. that sits on its screen in red type. And while you want to go back to sleep, you know that you’re already up, and there’s no going back now.
So, you slid out of your bed, being careful not to wake up your boyfriend whose light snores were currently echoing around the room. He looked adorable, almost angelic, in between your white sheets. His hair is mussed and his face is void of any tension. It’s the last time you’ll see him this calm for a while.
You avoided that spot in your hardwood floor that usually creaks when someone approaches it, and slipped out of your bedroom. You decided to take a quick shower and once you saw a big red star marked on your calendar for the next day, you figured that a nice breakfast would help your boyfriend a lot. 
You whipped together some French toast, eggs, and breakfast potatoes, all of which you knew Tom favored in the mornings. When you finally wrapped up, your bedroom door swung open again and Tom stepped out. He had a confused expression across his face, which quickly disappeared once he laid eyes on you. 
“Morning darling,” he greeted, coming up to give you a quick peck on the lips. You smile and hand him a plate full of food. “You didn’t have to do this, you know.”
“I know,” you replied, “but I was up anyway and I figured you needed it. Is it the short film you helped out with coming up?” 
He shook his head. “Nah, just a wedding video, but these are some fairly important clients that could lead to something bigger in the future. I told you that Harrison is filling in for me today?” 
You nod your head. “He knows what time we start?”
“I gave him the full brief of how things work and he knows to call if he has any problems.”
You let out a long sigh. “It’s gonna be weird without you. First pod you’re not there for.” He frowned and gave your hand a comforting squeeze.
“I know, love, but it’ll be great.”

Some people were interested in Greek mythology, others in science. Growing up, you were always worried when you didn’t quite find your niche thing to be obsessed about. While all the other kids talked about their love of horses or in Pokémon, you always tucked yourself in the back corner and buried yourself in a Nancy Drew book.
Soon, Nancy Drew and Scooby Doo turned into an obsession with Psych, Criminal Minds and Law & Order: SVU. You remembered when you were younger, how you laid across your floor to listen to Nancy Grace figure out more about the Casey Anthony trial. You’d obsessively scroll through Washington Post, CNN, and other news outlets’ justice or crime section. It wasn’t until you were older that you realized true crime was your hobby, your niche. 
So, you went to school and got a degree in journalism. And about halfway through your university career, you’d gone to a college party, gotten drunk, and started talking about the details of the Texas Killing Fields. Other people slowly floated away, becoming uninterested in the conversation and not understanding why you wanted to talk about something so horrific. Across the room, there was a girl who looked at you with pure excitement stretched across her face. She practically leaped over to you and said, “Tell me everything.”
About a year later, you and her became best friends. Her name was Zendaya Coleman, different than yours, but you were pretty sure she was a carbon copy of you otherwise. You’d watch Psych together, and then rewatch it over and over again once the series ended. Other times, you’d stay up late and watch documentaries about unsolved cases and general ones centered on the justice department. 
One day, you had a broadcast journalism cast final you needed help with in terms of filming. You’d been recommended Tom in passing conversation for help, and soon, you met him for coffee and told him all the ideas you had. (At the time, you hadn’t noticed the sudden glimmer in his eye when he looked at you. It wouldn’t be for a few more months that you would.) When he came over to your house later that week, you finished the project together, with Zendaya co-anchoring, and celebrated its completion over wine.  
When both you and Z went into your usual drunk talk about unsolved cases, Tom looked at the two of you with interest and then spit out, “Holy shit, have you guys ever thought of making this a podcast?”
And now, nearly three years later, a drunk idea led to success you never could dream about. It took you a while to actually kick off the podcast — two years after that fateful night. Now, a year into the whole gig, your podcast was consistently in the top 50 on the iTunes charts, and you had a whole fan base that always engaged with you on all social media.
You hosted it with Zendaya once a week. Episodes usually ranged for about an hour and a half, filled with your dialogue surrounding situations with serial killers or cults. Tom worked as the quiet producer, who always sat silently in the corner to make sure your microphones were consistently operating at the level they should be. 
It was a nice way to live. You had a flexible schedule, and though you had plans for an upcoming tour, you could all stay in your respective homes within your quiet town. 
When the knock came at your door that day, you took a quick peek through the peephole in your door, smiling when you saw your best friend on the other side. You swung the door open, immediately greeting her with a hug. 
“Hey Z,” you greeted. You opened the door wider, noticing she had a bag in hand. 
“I went to Cheesecake Factory earlier, and you know I hella brought cheesecake back,” she said. She plopped the bag on your table. You opened the bag, a smile coming to your face when you saw the slice of Oreo cheesecake she bought for you. You thanked her, shuffling around your drawers and cabinets for plates and cutlery. When you returned with the proper dishware, you noticed the off expression on your friend’s face. She was looking around thoughtfully, like something wasn’t quite sitting right with her.
“What’s up?” you asked, passing the plate over. She pulled out her own slice of cheesecake from the bag. 
“I think this is the first time I’ve come to your home and Tom hasn’t been here,” she joked. “Even when we’re not recording, he’s almost always here.” You laughed at the observation. 
“He actually chose to go to his home today. He’s got a big deadline coming up this weekend, and said I was ‘too distracting.’” You pulled out the air quotes at the end, and Zendaya rolled her eyes playfully.
“Boy needs to learn to keep his dick in his pants,” she teased, taking a bite out of her cheesecake. “But if Tom isn’t here, who’s gonna be the sound guy?” You bit your lip.
“Okay, so hear me out,” you said, raising up your hands already defensive. Zendaya deadpanned.
“Please tell me Tom didn’t hire Colton Lancaster,” she begged. You narrowed your eyes.
“What? No, ew.” She let out a sigh of relief. “Why would you even—“ 
“He’s the only other audio guy I know in town! His news podcast is a little bit boring content wise, but he’s got some nice audio going.” You giggled and shook your head. 
“Nah, apparently, Harrison has audio experience.” Zendaya raised her eyebrows.
“Quiet one? Stutters when he does talk?” You laughed.
“He was only nervous because he thinks you’re cute! But yeah, him. Tom told me when they did theater together back in high school he was always the sound guy before he made his debut on the stage.”
“Oooh okay Harrison, I see you. When is he coming?” You checked your watch. 
“He said he’s going to run a little bit late, but he should be here in about three more minutes.”
As if you summoned him yourself, the doorbell rang. You glanced at the door, then back at your friend, “Or maybe right now.”
You strode over to the door again, swinging it open and greeting the man of the hour. Harrison looked a little bit lost as he stepped into the foyer of your home. He had a backpack slung on his back and his hands were digging in his pockets.
“Hey Harrison,” Zendaya called out. “You like cheesecake?” Harrison blushed slightly.
“Uh, hey Zendaya. And uh, yeah, I do…” He looked back over at you, seeking some reassurance. You gave him a nod.
In truth, you still didn’t know Harrison that well, despite dating his roommate for a little over two years at this point and seeing him more than a handful of times. Yet, you still considered him a good friend, and Tom told you Harrison thought the same of you. Maybe you weren’t knowledgeable on the intimate details of his life, but you understood him and his quietness. And most of all, you respected each other.
“Zendaya bought some from Cheesecake Factory,” you explained, as you stepped into your main dining area.
“You can have the other half of my slice,” Zendaya offered. “I’m stuffed.”
“Oh, thanks,” Harrison replied. “I should probably start on getting you lot set up though.”
Zendaya waved it off and said, “No rush.” He shot you a look, silently asking for your permission.
“Yeah, c’mon Harrison, hang out with us for a bit. We’re just chatting.” 
With that, he smiled, plopped in the chair next to Zendaya, and started eating the cheesecake she offered him. 
“So, what’s the tea in your life, Harrison?” you asked.
He raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?” 
“Anything exciting going on? New shows you’re involved in?” He shook his head. 
“Just summer classes, lots of studying. I work at Soul Cycle, which is laid back.” He shrugged, then seemed to mull over something. “Though, we did have a couple arguing today in the shop. Don’t know about what, but it’s the most exciting thing to happen in there in a week.”
“That’s the trinket shop on the east side of town right?” Zendaya asked. Harrison nodded his head.
“Very small, but pays well.” Zendaya looked at you pointedly.
“We need to go there.” 
You let out a short laugh. “Why?”
“They have crystals! With all the shit that we talk, we probably need to cleanse our energies,” Zendaya insisted. “Besides, we can see Haz.” 
He blushed at the nickname and you tried to hold back a smile.
“It’s not a bad idea,” he murmured. Zendaya gave you an “I-told-you-so” look. “Really, I never used to believe in any of that. Always thought it was rubbish, but then Madame Auboin changed my life around.” He shrugged. “You never quite know what’ll happen to you. Best to take some preventative measures to make sure you’re keeping all of that out.”
And so finally, you agreed to go with Z and Harrison after enough convincing. Besides, everyone in town loved the owner, Diane Auboin.
After more conversation and eating, you finally went into your spare room that acted as your recording studio. Harrison sat at the computer, prepping everything up in the room, while you went over your unsolved crime again silently in your head and scrolled through the main talking points on your phone.
He gave you both the cue to start and you gave the introduction. “Welcome to ‘Anatomy of a Murder,’ where we dissect all the creepy shit serial killers pull so you don’t have to. Because let’s face it, it’s hard balancing work life with fighting off creeps.”
You were about halfway through the show when your phone started ringing loudly. Zendaya stopped mid-sentence and asked, “Did you forget to put your phone on Do Not Disturb?”
You shook your head. “Um, no, it’s Tom actually. He knows we’re recording, so he wouldn’t call unless something’s up. 
Harrison pressed the stop recording button on the computer and you picked up the phone.
“Hey babe, you okay?” you asked, stepping out of the room.
“Oh, Y/N, thank God. You’re at home, right? Harrison and Zendaya are still with you?” he asked. There was traces of panic in his voice and you grew more concerned. 
“Yeah… why? What’s going on?”
“Stay put, I’m on my way to your house right now. Don’t move, okay darling?” 
“I won’t,” you promised, hanging up. You stepped back into the recording studio. “Tom just did the weirdest—” 
But you stopped speaking when you saw their facial expressions. They were both staring in horror out of something on Zendaya’s phone. They both looked up at you and you saw Harrison visibly gulp.
“What’s up?” you inquired. Zendaya looked up at Harrison, then back at you, clearly at a complete loss at words.
Finally, she spoke, “They found a body out by Kinakee Lake. Well, two actually.” 
She passed you the phone and you saw a photograph of police vans over by the lake on the outskirts of the city limits. The headline read, “Two found dead at Kinakee Lake,” and naturally, had Colton Lancaster’s byline.
You heard the door ring and swallowed, passing the phone back over. “That has to be Tom,” you said.
You usually check the peephole before you open the door, but in your pure panic and eagerness to see your boyfriend, you neglected to do so. So, you swung the door open again that day, shocked when you saw a man and a woman standing at your front door with police badges adorning their suits.
“Are you Y/N Y/L/N?” the female officer asked.
“Yes, that would be me,” you answered.
“You’re wanted at the police station for questioning over two bodies recently discovered at Kinakee Lake.”

Book Of Genesis - From The Latin Vulgate (1859 - Haydock Translation of The Roman Catholic Bible) - Chapter 17
INTRODUCTION.
The Hebrews now entitle all the Five Books of Moses, from the initial words, which originally were written like one continued word or verse; but the Sept. have preferred to give the titles the most memorable occurrences of each work. On this occasion, the Creation of all things out of nothing, strikes us with peculiar force. We find a refutation of all the heathenish mythology, and of the world’s eternity, which Aristotle endeavoured to establish. We behold the short reign of innocence, and the origin of sin and misery, the dispersion of nations, and the providence of God watching over his chosen people, till the death of Joseph, about the year 2369 (Usher) 2399 (Sal. and Tirin) B.C. 1631. We shall witness the same care in the other Books of Scripture, and adore his wisdom and goodness in preserving to himself faithful witnesses, and a true Holy Catholic Church, in all ages, even when the greatest corruption seemed to overspread the land. This Book is so called from its treating of the Generation, that is, of the Creation and the beginning of the world. The Hebrews call it Bereshith, from the word with which it begins. It contains not only the History of the Creation of the World, but also an account of its progress during the space of 2369 years, that is, until the death of Joseph.

Chapter 17
The Covenant of circumcision.
[1] And after he began to be ninety and nine years old, the Lord appeared to him: and said unto him: I am the Almighty God: walk before me, and be perfect. Postquam vero nonaginta et novem annorum esse coeperat, apparuit ei Dominus, dixitque ad eum : Ego Deus omnipotens : ambula coram me, et esto perfectus.
[2] And I will make my covenant between me and thee: and I will multiply thee exceedingly. Ponamque foedus meum inter me et te, et multiplicabo te vehementer nimis.
[3] Abram fell flat on his face. Cecidit Abram pronus in faciem.
[4] And God said to him: I AM, and my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Dixitque ei Deus : Ego sum, et pactum meum tecum, erisque pater multarum gentium.
[5] Neither shall thy name be called any more Abram: but thou shalt be called Abraham: because I have made thee a father of many nations. Nec ultra vocabitur nomen tuum Abram, sed appellaberis Abraham : quia patrem multarum gentium constitui te.
[6] And I will make thee increase, exceedingly, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. Faciamque te crescere vehementissime, et ponam te in gentibus, regesque ex te egredientur.

[10] This is my covenant which you shall observe, between me and you, and thy seed after thee: All the male kind of you shall be circumcised: Hoc est pactum meum quod observabitis inter me et vos, et semen tuum post te : circumcidetur ex vobis omne masculinum :
[11] And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, that it may be for a sign of the covenant between me and you. et circumcidetis carnem praeputii vestri, ut sit in signum foederis inter me et vos.

[17] Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, saying in his heart: Shall a son, thinkest thou, be born to him that is a hundred years old? and shall Sara that is ninety years old bring forth? Cecidit Abraham in faciem suam, et risit, dicens in corde suo : Putasne centenario nascetur filius? et Sara nonagenaria pariet?
[18] And he said to God: O that Ismael may live before thee. Dixitque ad Deum : Utinam Ismael vivat coram te.
[19] And God said to Abraham: Sara thy wife shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name Isaac, and I will establish my covenant with him for a perpetual covenant, and with his seed after him. Et ait Deus ad Abraham : Sara uxor tua pariet tibi filium, vocabisque nomen ejus Isaac, et constituam pactum meum illi in foedus sempiternum, et semini ejus post eum.
[20] And as for Ismael I have also heard thee. Behold, I will bless him, and increase, and multiply him exceedingly: he shall beget twelve chiefs, and I will make him a great nation. Super Ismael quoque exaudivi te : ecce, benedicam ei, et augebo, et multiplicabo eum valde : duodecim duces generabit, et faciam illum in gentem magnam.
[21] But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sara shall bring forth to thee at this time in the next year. Pactum vero meum statuam ad Isaac, quem pariet tibi Sara tempore isto in anno altero.
[22] And when he had left off speaking with him, God went up from Abraham. Cumque finitus esset sermo loquentis cum eo, ascendit Deus ab Abraham.
[23] And Abraham took Ismael his son, and all that were born in his house: and all whom he had bought, every male among the men of his house: and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskin forthwith the very same day, as God had commanded him. Tulit autem Abraham Ismael filium suum, et omnes vernaculos domus suae, universosque quos emerat, cunctos mares ex omnibus viris domus suae : et circumcidit carnem praeputii eorum statim in ipsa die, sicut praeceperat ei Deus.
[24] Abraham was ninety and nine years old, when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin. Abraham nonaginta et novem erat annorum quando circumcidit carnem praeputii sui.
[25] And Ismael his son was full thirteen years old at the time of his circumcision. Et Ismael filius tredecim annos impleverat tempore circumcisionis suae.
[26] The selfsame day was Abraham circumcised and Ismael his son. Eadem die circumcisus est Abraham et Ismael filius ejus :
[27] And all the men of his house, as well they that were born in his house, as the bought servants and strangers were circumcised with him. et omnes viri domus illius, tam vernaculi, quam emptitii et alienigenae pariter circumcisi sunt.
Commentary:
Ver. 1. Walk, &c. by assiduous meditation and advancement in virtue. This apparition was to inform Abram, that the promised seed should be born of Sarai. H.
Ver. 4. I am unchangeable, and faithful to my promises, the only God. D. --- Nations. Jews, Saracens or Arabs, Idumeans, and, by faith, of all nations who shall believe in Christ, the King of kings. C. --- The true Church will never then be reduced to a few unknown believers, as the Donatists and Protestants assert. W.
Ver. 5. Abraham. Abram, in the Hebrew, signifies a high father; but Abraham, the father of the multitude: Sarai signifies my Lady, but Sara absolutely Lady. Ch. --- God thus receives them, as it were, into his own family. C.
Ver. 7. Perpetual; that shall last as long as they remain obedient. M. v. 9.
Ver. 11. You shall, either by yourselves, or by the ministry of others, with respect to infants. That part of the body was chosen, because the effects of sin first appeared there; and because a part of the Hebrews' creed was, that Christ should be born of the family of Abraham. --- A sign that Abraham had agreed to the covenant with God, and to be a memorial of his faith and justice, Rom. iv. 2.; to distinguish also the faithful from infidels; to purge away original sin in male children, eight days old; and to be a figure of baptism. M. T. --- God always appoints some sign of his covenants, as Jesus Christ instituted the holy sacrament of his body and blood, under exterior appearances, to assure us of his new alliance with Christians. C. --- The sacraments of the old law caused grace, only by means of faith in the Redeemer, of which they were signs. S. Aug. de Nupt. ii. c. ult. In this sense, the holy fathers assert, that circumcision remitted original sin to those who could receive it; though some think, it was only a bare sign or distinctive mark of the Jews. C. --- It is far beneath our baptism, which is more easy, general and efficacious; as the Christian sacraments are not like those of Moses, weak and needy elements. Gal. iv. 9. S. Aug. ep. 158, ad Jan. Ps. 73, &c. W.
Ver. 12. Days, when he will be able to bear the pain without danger. This might be deferred for a just reason, as it was in the desert. Jos. v. 6. In this case people might be saved, as younger children and all females might, by the application of the remedies used in the law of nature, sacrifice, the faith of parents, &c. M. --- Of your stock, and, being arrived at years of discretion, is desirous of enjoying your privileges. Some think, that slaves had no choice left; but servants, and people who had a mind to live in the country, were not bound to submit to this rite against their will. It is even more probable, that none were under this obligation, except Abraham and his posterity by Isaac. His other children adopted it in part, but not with the exactitude of the Jews. C.
Ver. 14. Circumcised. Sept. adds, "on the eighth day," with the Sam. and many Latin copies. C. --- Destroyed, &c. lose the privileges of the Hebrews, or be put to death, when he grows up and does not supply this defect. S. Aug. reading on the eighth day, concluded that as a child of that age, could not, with reason, be put to death for an offense, in which he could have no share, the destruction here threatened is that of the soul, for transgression, in Adam, the original covenant, and dying in that state unclean, must be excluded from heaven, as people are now who die unbaptized. This difficult passage may, however, be explained as if the threat regarded the negligent parents. "He who shall not circumcise...shall be destroyed." Syr. or, as the Heb. may be rendered, "the male that doth not," &c.; in which case, he becomes guilty of a transgression, when he is arrived at the years sufficient to understand his duty, and does not fulfil it. W.
Ver. 15. Sara, princess of all the nations of the faithful, not simply of one family. M.
Ver. 16. Bless, and enable her to have a son, who shall also have many children. --- Whom. This is referred to Sara, in Heb. and Chal.; but to Isaac, in the Syriac. The blessing, at any rate, reverts to the mother; who was a figure of the blessed Virgin, and of the Church; both persecuted with their children; both, in the end, triumphant. Gal. iv. 23. C.
Ver. 17. Laughed for joy and admiration at such unexpected news. "He rejoiced," says the Chal.: the faith of Abraham is never called into question. Rom. iv. 19.
Ver. 18. Before thee, under thy protection, and in a virtuous manner. M. --- He seems to be satisfied, though Go should not bless him with any more children, provided this one may live worthy of God. H.
Ver. 19. Isaac, "laughter," alluding to the exultation of Abraham, more than to the laughter of Sara, which deserved some reprehension. G. xxi. 6.
Ver. 20. Nation of Arabs, who are still divided into twelve tribes. See G. xxv. 13. C.
Ver. 23. His house. All wee kept in such good order by their master, that none was found unwilling to submit, if indeed it was left to their choice. H. --- Abraham loses no time in complying with God's commands. M.
Ver. 25. Full thirteen, or beginning his fourteenth year, at which age the Arabs and Mahometans still generally circumcise; but without any order from God. C.
